Beeswax Wraps: How They Work, How Long They Last, How to Care for Them

Beeswax wraps have a slightly suspicious reputation — they sound like the kind of thing that works in theory and disappoints in practice. They don't, if you use them right. Here's the whole story.

What they are

Cotton fabric, dipped in beeswax (sometimes with jojoba oil and tree resin added). The beeswax makes the cotton breathable and slightly tacky when warmed by your hands. You press it onto a bowl, around a sandwich, over a half-cucumber — the warmth seals it.

It's the same idea as oilcloth, with a softer, kitchen-friendly material.

What they're brilliant for

  • Sandwiches and lunch. Wraps a sandwich better than cling film, no rustling all morning.
  • Cut fruit and veg. Half a lemon, half a cucumber, half a melon. The wax holds against moisture without trapping it.
  • Bowls in the fridge. Cover a bowl of leftover stew or marinating chicken. Press the wrap around the rim, the warmth seals it.
  • Cheese. The breathable cotton lets the cheese stay alive, not sweat in plastic.
  • Bread. Wraps a loaf, lets the crust stay crusty.

What they don't do well

  • Raw meat or fish. Don't. Hot water kills wraps and you can't sterilise wax.
  • Hot food. Heat melts the wax. Let leftovers cool first.
  • Things you'd freeze. The wax cracks at deep-freeze temperatures.

How to wash them

  1. Cold or lukewarm water — never hot.
  2. A drop of mild washing-up liquid.
  3. Soft cloth or sponge, gently. No scrubbing.
  4. Rinse, shake off, hang to air dry.

That's it. Two minutes per wrap.

How long they last

Roughly a year of daily use. You'll know they're tired when the wax stops sealing — they go from "press and stick" to "press and slide". At that point, compost them. Yes, really, compost. The wrap is cotton, beeswax, and tree resin — entirely biodegradable.

How to refresh them

Before you replace, try refreshing. Lay the wrap on baking paper on a tray. Heat the oven to 80°C. Slide the wrap in for 2 minutes. The wax remelts and redistributes. Often gives you another few months.

How many do you need?

Most kitchens are well-served by three: small (lemon halves, garlic), medium (sandwiches, small bowls), large (loaves, melons, cheese). Our set of 3 covers exactly that.

If you make a lot of lunches: add an extra medium-sized sandwich wrap.

Why bother

The average UK household goes through about 200 metres of cling film a year. Three beeswax wraps replace most of it for around eight pounds a year, amortised. The kitchen smells faintly of honey when you open the drawer. The world has slightly less plastic in it. None of these are bad.
